EuChemS Chemistry Congress 2022, Lissabon

Manfred Hagmann, Hildegard Vogelsang, and Selina Steinhilber participated in the EuChemS Congress in Lisbon.

The EuChemS Chemistry Congress, where international scientists gathered for several days under this year’s motto “Chemistry as the Central Science,” focuses on the central role of chemistry and its interfaces with biology, materials science, and environmental science, addressing fundamental problems of modern society and the advancement of humanity.

Our team had the opportunity to listen to lectures on the latest developments in chemical science and discuss these and other topics with renowned scientists. Hildegard Vogelsang and Selina Steinhilber presented their research during the poster session and discussed their work with other participants and interested parties.

Detection of Trace Metals in Polymeric Medical Products Using Oxygen Bomb Combustion and ICP-MS
SAS Hagmann, Hildegard Vogelsang, Manfred Hagmann

Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) is an analytical technique used in medical technology, as well as in the mechanical engineering and plastics industries, for the quantitative determination of nearly all metals and metalloids in solution.

In collaboration with SAS Hagmann and the Georg-August University in Göttingen, Hildegard Vogelsang developed a method using the aforementioned technique that reduces sample preparation time and analysis time, thereby shortening the overall analysis time.

The safety of polymers intended for medical applications can be demonstrated, among other ways, through tests for extractable and leachable substances. However, since these analytical procedures can be very time-consuming, Hildegard Vogelsang developed a method to reduce this time requirement. Her study proposes a combustion process in an oxygen bomb for the complete digestion of selected polymers, followed by the analysis of arsenic, cadmium, and lead.

Ultimately, it is possible to reduce the analysis time to one day using the oxygen bomb method.

Optimization of Solid-Phase Microextraction of Polar Aqueous Extracts for GC-MS Screening Analysis of Medical Products – SAS Hagmann, Selina Steinhilber, Manfred Hagmann

Protecting people is always a highly desirable goal, especially in healthcare. To safeguard patients and medical personnel from unwanted substances, it is crucial to understand the types of substances and their concentrations released from medical products. Gas chromatography is already successfully used in this regard.

Selina Steinhilber’s study demonstrates the potential of GC-MS screening for medical products. She suggests enriching leachability and extractability on the SPME fiber compared to pure liquid injection, enabling significantly more sensitive measurements.
